Aproko Doctor Warns Pregnant Women Against Retinol and Harmful Skincare Ingredients
Nigerian health influencer and medical doctor Egemba Fidelis, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, has cautioned pregnant women to be mindful of the skincare products they use during pregnancy.
In a video shared on Instagram on Monday, he identified retinol and related compounds as the most dangerous skincare ingredients for expectant mothers. According to him, retinoids, commonly listed as Retin-A, Adapalene, Tretinoin, Isotretinoin, or Retinoformatase, can affect the organs of a developing baby in the womb.
“If you don’t want your baby to be born with defects, avoid Retinol during pregnancy,” Aproko Doctor warned. He further advised against hydroquinone and some essential oils that may trigger uterine contractions.
Medical experts back his warning. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends avoiding skincare products that contain retinoids, hydroquinone, phthalates, and formaldehyde because of their potential risks to fetal development. Instead, they advise using gentle, alcohol-free cleansers and mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
Healthline also reports that prescription retinoids, such as isotretinoin, carry a 20–35 percent risk of severe congenital abnormalities. Dermatologist Shoshana Marmon recommends keeping skincare simple, focusing on cleansing, moisturising, and protecting the skin, while avoiding fragrances, sulfates, and harsh chemicals.
