Vice President JD Vance Escorts Charlie Kirk’s Casket Aboard Air Force Two to Arizona
Vice President JD Vance accompanied the remains of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Air Force Two to Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday in a solemn tribute following Kirk’s assassination.
According to reports, Kirk, 31, was fatally shot Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. His casket was retrieved in Salt Lake City, and Vance joined military service members in helping to load the casket aboard the aircraft for the final flight home.
On arrival in Phoenix, Vice President Vance, dressed in a dark suit, disembarked alongside his wife Usha, and Kirk’s widow, Erika. Both women wore black and sunglasses. Together, they oversaw the casket’s removal from the plane in a ceremony marked by mourning and respect.
Vance and Kirk had been close colleagues: Kirk supported Vance’s vice presidential bid and helped with staffing various efforts in the administration. In public statements, Vance described Kirk as “a true friend.”
Investigations into the circumstances of Kirk’s death are underway. Authorities continue to seek leads related to the shooting.
