US Reaffirms Lifetime Ban Policy for Visa Overstayers

The United States government has issued a stern warning to foreign nationals, cautioning that overstaying a visa could result in deportation and a permanent ban from re-entering the country.

In a statement released on Monday, US immigration authorities reiterated their longstanding policy on visa compliance.

“If you remain in the United States beyond your authorised period of stay, you could be deported, and could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States,” the statement read.

The warning comes as the US continues to tighten enforcement measures in response to rising immigration violations, including a growing number of visa overstays, many of which involve young Africans pursuing education or economic opportunities.

Recent data from the US Department of Homeland Security highlights that visa overstays account for a significant share of annual immigration infractions. In response, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has intensified public awareness campaigns aimed at educating foreign nationals on the consequences of non-compliance.

Under current US immigration law, individuals who remain in the country unlawfully for more than 180 days may face a three- or ten-year ban, and in some cases, a lifetime bar from returning.

The warning is particularly relevant for Nigerians and other nationals with plans to study, work, or settle in the US. With increasing global scrutiny on migration, officials urge travelers to fully understand and respect the terms of their stay to avoid life-altering penalties.
