NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Fake Colgate Toothpaste in Circulation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued Public Alert No. 022/2026, warning Nigerians over the circulation of unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste in the country.

According to the agency, the alert followed a complaint received by its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate on the distribution of the products, particularly in Kaduna State.

NAFDAC disclosed that its investigation team discovered two suspected counterfeit variants, Colgate ActivGel 100g and Colgate Herbal 100g, being sold in a retail outlet.

“The Post-Marketing Surveillance (PMS) Directorate received a complaint about the distribution of an unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste in Kaduna state,” the agency stated.

The agency added that the products were traced to informal distribution channels, with the retailer unable to provide proof of purchase after reportedly buying from a door-to-door sales representative.

NAFDAC warned that the products pose potential health risks, stressing that they do not meet required regulatory standards for safety and quality assurance.

“The products pose a potential risk to public health and safety,” the agency noted, adding that the items have since been removed from circulation while investigations continue.

The agency further urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspected counterfeit products to the nearest NAFDAC office, as efforts intensify to track those responsible.

This latest alert underscores ongoing concerns over counterfeit consumer goods in Nigeria, particularly products that directly impact public health.
