Frequent Ejaculation May Improve Sperm Quality, Study Finds

A new study has found that frequent ejaculation may significantly improve sperm quality, challenging long-standing advice that men should abstain for several days to boost fertility.

According to a report obtained from THE CONVERSATION, which analysed semen data from over 55,000 men across 115 studies, sperm stored for long periods inside the male reproductive system tend to age and lose quality.

The report noted that prolonged abstinence leads to a decline in sperm motility (movement), viability, and DNA integrity, all of which are critical for successful fertilisation.

Scientists linked this decline to two major factors, oxidative stress, described as a form of biological “rust” that damages sperm, and energy depletion, as sperm cells lose strength over time while in storage.

Although abstinence has been known to increase sperm count, the study stressed that quantity does not necessarily equal quality, noting that fresher sperm may offer better chances of conception.

The findings also support earlier research showing that ejaculating within 48 hours before providing a sample can improve IVF outcomes, compared to longer periods of abstinence.

The World Health Organization (WHO) currently recommends abstaining for two to seven days before sperm analysis, but the new evidence suggests that shorter intervals may be more beneficial for sperm health.

Beyond humans, researchers examined data across 30 animal species, including birds and mammals, and found similar patterns of sperm deterioration during storage.

The report concluded that while many fertility factors such as age, environment, and genetics are beyond human control, the duration of sperm storage is a simple, modifiable factor that could improve fertility outcomes.
