EFFURUN CLASH: Delta Govt Warns Political Actors, Orders Probe Into NDC, APC Disturbance

The Delta State Government has issued a stern warning to political actors across the state following a reported breach of public peace in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, involving suspected supporters of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reiterating its firm stance against political violence, the government declared on Friday that no individual, youth organization, or political group would be permitted to disrupt the peace and stability enjoyed across Delta State.

Addressing journalists in Asaba, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, revealed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed security agencies to conduct a swift, thorough investigation into the incident and ensure all culprits are prosecuted.

Aniagwu expressed deep concern over viral video footage documenting the altercation in Uvwie LGA, emphasizing that Delta State will not allow democratic competition to degenerate into thuggery, harassment, or a culture of physical intimidation.

“Governor Oborevwori has directed the security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure that whoever is found to have participated in the act is made to face the full weight of the law,” Aniagwu stated. “Political affiliation is not a shield against the law. If anybody commits an offence, the law should take its course. We cannot preach peace and at the same time tolerate people who undermine it.”

The commissioner emphasized that every political party, candidate, and supporter holds the constitutional right to campaign freely and peacefully in any part of Delta State without fear of obstruction or violence. However, he warned that electioneering activities must never be used as a license for lawlessness or confrontation.

Highlighting the administration’s record, Aniagwu noted that the government has delivered significant developmental milestones across all three senatorial districts under Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda. He stressed that the ruling party and all political actors must engage citizens based on their performance records and policy ideas rather than resorting to physical supremacy.

“No election, political ambition, or party interest is worth the life of any Deltan,” Aniagwu warned. “Politicians must learn to compete with ideas, policy programmes, and track records rather than violence.”

The state government called on political leaders, community elders, candidates, and youth groups across Delta State to exercise restraint over their supporters and ensure that all campaign activities remain peaceful. Security agencies were also urged to maintain vigilance, remain impartial, and guarantee a level playing field for all political participants while safeguarding public order.
