Riverine Development: Oborevwori Flags Off N29.8bn Aboh-Akarai Road
Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, has flagged off the N29.8 billion Aboh-Akarai Road and Bridge project in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure development.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the governor said the project reflects deliberate efforts to connect rural and riverine communities through resilient road networks that drive economic growth and improve quality of life.
“This particular project came to my attention after the Deputy Governor attended a burial ceremony in Akarai. It took him several hours to access the community, and upon his return, he appealed passionately for the approval of this road project. He told me that approving the road would mean touching lives in the rural communities, and I immediately assured him that the project would be done. Today, that promise has become a reality”.
The 11-kilometre road, stretching from Aboh through Umuti to Akarai-Obodo and Akarai-Etiti, will feature reinforced concrete pavement, drainage systems, culverts, and a 140-metre bridge across the Okiri River.
Oborevwori noted that the project is designed to withstand the swampy terrain and flood conditions, ensuring year-round accessibility.
“For many years, residents of these communities have depended largely on river transportation. But with the completion of this road, things will change for the better. Movement will become easier, farmers will transport their produce to markets faster, students will gain easier access to schools, patients will reach hospitals without stress, and families will remain connected even during the rainy season,” he said.
He disclosed that the contractor has been mobilised with a 40 percent advance payment of N11.9 billion, with completion expected within 12 months.
Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme described the project as historic for Ndokwa Nation, while other stakeholders commended the administration’s commitment to development across previously underserved communities.
