Nicki Minaj to Speak at UN on Nigeria Christian Genocide Claims
American rap superstar Onika Maraj-Petty, popularly known as Nicki Minaj, is scheduled to address the United Nations in New York on Tuesday, where she is expected to speak on claims of widespread attacks and alleged “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
Minaj will feature alongside the United States ambassador to the UN, Michael Waltz, and Alex Bruesewitz, a senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump and organiser of the event. The development was first disclosed by Time magazine’s senior political correspondent, Eric Cortellessa, via his X handle on Sunday night.
Confirming her participation, Amb. Waltz praised Minaj as “not only arguably the greatest female recording artist, but also a principled individual who refuses to remain silent in the face of injustice.” He commended the rapper for using her global influence to spotlight what he described as “atrocities against Christians in Nigeria.”
Responding to Waltz, Minaj expressed gratitude for the invitation and said she did not take the platform lightly. She vowed she would “never stand down in the face of injustice,” adding that her voice carries a responsibility beyond entertainment.
Her scheduled appearance comes days after former U.S. President Donald Trump alleged that a “Christian genocide” was taking place in Nigeria and announced that the country would be designated a “Country of Particular Concern.” He also urged Congress to take immediate action a stance Minaj openly supported.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has firmly rejected the allegations, insisting that the country’s security challenges stem from criminality, insurgency, and communal conflicts rather than religious persecution. Despite Nigeria’s rebuttal, U.S. officials continue to express concern over the situation.
