Lionel Richie Returns as American Idol Judge After Health Scare

Singer Lionel Richie will return as a judge on American Idol for its 25th season, despite a series of recent health concerns that forced him to take a break from touring.

Richie, 77, will return alongside Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood, while Ryan Seacrest is also set to return as host. The news was announced by Bryan during a concert in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday.

The announcement comes days after Richie underwent a heart procedure for atrial fibrillation (AFib). His representative said the procedure went well and that the singer is recovering.

“Lionel underwent a common procedure for Atrial fibrillation (AFib). The doctor said everything went perfectly. Lionel is doing great but will take some time off and will be back on stage soon.”

Richie has faced several health interruptions during his current Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. In June, he ended a Minnesota concert early after feeling dizzy and later postponed two shows while under medical advice to rest.

In August, Richie was hospitalised after his St. Louis performance and underwent cardiac tests. He was released in early September, with reports saying he was doing well at the time.

His latest health issue led to the cancellation of three tour dates in San Francisco, Chicago and Columbus, Ohio. Richie is expected to take some time away from performing before returning to the stage.

American Idol was renewed for Season 25 in July, with the new season expected to premiere in 2027. Richie has served as a judge since ABC revived the competition in 2018.

Richie, a four-time Grammy winner and former member of the Commodores, is known for hits including “Hello,” “All Night Long” and “Three Times a Lady.” He has also co-written the charity classic “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson.
