Toyota CEO Koji Sato Steps Down, Becomes Vice Chairman
Toyota Motor Corporation has announced a major leadership change that will see Koji Sato, its current President and Chief Executive Officer, step down and take on the role of Vice Chairman and Chief Industry Officer, the company confirmed on Friday.
The decision is part of a broader executive restructuring designed to adapt to rapid changes in the global automotive industry.
According to Toyota’s official announcement, the changes will take effect on April 1, 2026, following approval by the Board of Directors. Under the new structure, Kenta Kon, Toyota’s Chief Financial Officer and a long-time company executive, will succeed Sato as President and CEO.
The leadership reshuffle aims to “accelerate management decision-making in response to changes in the internal and external environment,” Toyota said. Sato’s move to Vice Chairman and Chief Industry Officer will allow him to focus on broader industry matters, including collaboration with external partners and strategic initiatives across the automotive sector.
Sato, who became Toyota’s CEO in April 2023, will continue to play a central role in shaping the company’s direction from his new position. Kon, aged 57, has been with Toyota since 1991, rising through finance and executive ranks. His elevation to CEO reflects Toyota’s emphasis on strengthening internal governance and operational agility amid global competition.
The change in leadership comes at a time when Toyota is navigating evolving challenges in the automotive market, including intensifying competition from global rivals and the industry’s broader shift toward electrification and new mobility technologies.
