The chairman of Senate Committee on Public Accounts and Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Pharm. Matthew Urhoghide has tasked beneficiaries of his scholarship to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits and justify his investment in their future.
Senator Urhoghide gave the charge on Saturday at the the 2017 second batch Senator Matthew Urhoghide scholarship award at Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, Benin City.
The Senator stressed that the scholarship scheme is for indigent students who are in public secondary schools and higher institutions, including university.
In his words, Senator Urhoghide said, “we are targeting the children of the poor and they are in public schools. I will not pay school fees for children in ivory schools where hundreds of thousands of naira are paid. So any one you find in any of these public institutions who on account of poverty or inability of their parents or guardian to pay fees, I decided to cover that gap”.
The Senator assured that he would continue to award scholarship to the children of the poor as long as he represents the people of Edo South Senatorial District in the Senate.
“As long as I represent the people of Edo South Senatorial District, I will continue to pay the school fees of the poor”, he said.
Tasking the beneficiaries to ensure they pass their examinations to continue to enjoy the scholarship, Senator Urhoghide pointed out that education is the best form of empowerment for youths as it will make them know their right from left.
According to him, “empowerment is not the motor cycle I buy for you, empowerment is not the money, the cash I give to you, real empowerment Is education. When you educate people they can now discern their left from their right, what is good from what is bad. When a man is educated his mind is now open to the world”.
He assured that the award of scholarship will not stop his other developmental efforts in the area of road construction, construction of schools and health facilities adding that he has embarked on over one hundred projects which are at about 95% completion.
In his remarks, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, vice- chairman, Edo south, Hon. Nosa Ehima admonished the beneficiaries to be focused and study hard to pass all their examinations, saying that is the only way to encourage the donor.
Over two hundred students from secondary schools and universities who are indigenes of Edo south benefited from this year edition of the scholarship scheme.
