Amnesty Slams Madonna University Over Expulsion of Gen Z Nursing Students
Human rights organization Amnesty International has slammed Madonna University, Elele Campus in Rivers State, over the expulsion and suspension of 15 final-year nursing students who featured in a viral social media video.
The controversy follows a viral TikTok video filmed inside the institution’s teaching hospital, where 500-level nursing undergraduates participated in the popular “Gen Z nurses” trend with the caption “No fall sick oo, na Gen Z full hospital”. The private Catholic institution subsequently expelled one 500-level student and suspended 14 others, sparking intense public debate across the country.
Amnesty International condemned the disciplinary action as harsh and disproportionate, warning that terminating the academic careers of students on the verge of graduation violates their rights to education and freedom of expression.
The rights group’s intervention aligns with growing calls from student bodies, including the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students’ Association (NUNSA), urging the university management to recall the affected students and substitute the expulsions with formal warnings.
