Actress Doris Ogala Demands N1bn Damages from Pastor Chris over Alleged Breach of Marriage Promise

Nollywood actress and member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Ms. Doris Ogala, has formally demanded the sum of N1 billion in damages from Lagos-based cleric, Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of Grace Nation Liberation City, over an alleged breach of promise to marry.

The demand was conveyed in a letter dated December 16, 2025, issued by her legal representatives, Synergy Law Partners, and addressed to Pastor Okafor at his Ojodu Berger residence. The letter warned that legal action would be initiated if the cleric fails to comply with the demand within 21 days.

According to the lawyers, Ogala and Pastor Okafor were involved in a personal relationship that began in 2017, during which the cleric allegedly made a “clear, consistent and unequivocal” promise to marry the actress. The relationship reportedly commenced at a period when Ogala was emotionally vulnerable and seeking pastoral counsel.

The legal letter stated that the alleged promise went beyond verbal assurances and was reinforced by conduct, including introductions to Pastor Okafor’s family and joint appearances at family events. Ogala’s lawyers claimed that documentary evidence—such as photographs, videos, WhatsApp messages and banking records—exists to substantiate her claims and establish what they described as a legitimate expectation of marriage.

The actress further alleged that she relied on the promise to her detriment, taking what her counsel described as irreversible personal decisions. Among these, the letter claimed that Ogala exited a troubled marriage and abandoned prospects of reconciliation based on assurances of a future marital union with the cleric.

The demand letter also alleged financial loss, stating that Ogala entrusted Pastor Okafor with N45 million in a single transaction and granted him access to her financial affairs on the strength of the relationship and promise of marriage.

The dispute reportedly escalated when Pastor Okafor publicly announced his engagement to another woman, an action Ogala’s lawyers described as a clear repudiation of the alleged promise. They further argued that the public nature of the announcement caused their client severe emotional distress and reputational damage, particularly given her status as a public figure.

Ogala’s legal team also alleged that she has since been subjected to intense public scrutiny, online harassment and victim-shaming, which they attributed to the fallout from the cleric’s actions. They accused Pastor Okafor of responsibility for the alleged unauthorised circulation of private photographs, an allegation to which he has not publicly responded as of press time.

While acknowledging that marriage cannot be compelled, the lawyers maintained that Nigerian law provides remedies for breach of promise and aggravated harm. On this basis, they demanded N1 billion as general and aggravated damages for emotional trauma, reputational injury and the public nature of the alleged breach.

The letter gave Pastor Okafor 21 days to settle the demand, warning that failure to do so would result in a suit before a court of competent jurisdiction.

As at the time of this report Pastor Okafor or his legal representatives are yet to issue an official statement as regards the claims.
