Trump to Receive Israel’s Highest Civilian Honour for Peace Efforts

Israel’s President, Isaac Herzog, announced on Monday that he will present the country’s highest civilian honour to former U.S. President Donald Trump for his pivotal role in securing the release of hostages from Gaza and advancing efforts to end the ongoing war.

“Through his tireless efforts, President Trump has not only helped bring our loved ones home but has also laid the foundations for a new era in the Middle East built on security, cooperation, and genuine hope for a peaceful future,” Herzog said in a statement issued by his office.

According to the Israeli presidency, the award known as the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour will be presented in the coming months. Herzog noted that he would formally notify Trump of the decision during his visit to Israel on Monday.

The announcement comes as Israel and Hamas prepare for a hostage-prisoner exchange, part of the first phase of a peace plan proposed by Trump. The 20-point plan aims to end over two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began after the militant group’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

During his brief visit, Trump is also expected to meet with families of hostages and deliver an address to the Israeli parliament.

The Israeli presidency explained that the medal is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the State of Israel or humanity.

In 2013, the same honour was presented to former U.S. President Barack Obama.
