Shettima Leads 2026 Armed Forces Tribute in Abuja
Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima led proceedings marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) at the cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier in Eagle Square, Abuja, representing President Bola Tinubu, who is attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2026 in the United Arab Emirates.
The AFCRD is an annual event organised by the Ministry of Defence to honour fallen heroes, including personnel who died in the World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peace support operations, and internal security missions, particularly the ongoing fight against terrorism.
The event also celebrates living veterans and seeks to mobilise financial and moral support for their welfare and the families of fallen service members. Nigeria observes the day on January 15, reflecting both the end of the Nigerian Civil War and national historical realities.
The 2026 AFCRD is especially significant, coinciding with notable successes by the Nigerian Armed Forces in the Northeast and other regions.
The Federal Government commended the courage, professionalism, and sacrifices of officers and called on citizens, organisations, and the private sector to support service personnel, the wounded, and families of fallen heroes, during the remembrance period and beyond.
