OPM Pastor Gives N10m to Woman Who Married His Adopted Autistic Son

The General Overseer of the Omega Power Ministry (OPM), Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, has gifted N10 million and other incentives to a woman who agreed to marry his adopted autistic son, Aboy, following a controversial public proposal.

The development comes days after the cleric sparked backlash for offering financial incentives to any woman willing to marry the young man, who is non-verbal and requires daily care.

According to reports, the wedding ceremony was held on March 29, with the pastor also promising additional benefits including accommodation and other support packages for the couple.

The earlier proposal had generated widespread criticism online, with many questioning the conditions attached to the offer, including the requirement that the prospective wife “must not be autistic”.

Reacting to the backlash, the cleric had apologised, stating that he “can never degrade any woman,” while maintaining that his intention was to secure care and companionship for his adopted son.

Aboy, who was reportedly abandoned as a child and raised under the pastor’s care, is said to require assistance with daily activities, a factor that informed the unusual arrangement.

The marriage and accompanying financial support have since sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the gesture as humanitarian, while others continue to raise ethical concerns about the circumstances surrounding the union.

The development has further fueled conversations around care for persons with special needs, societal responsibility, and the boundaries of philanthropy in sensitive situations.
