MOSRA Energy Says Delta Holds Nigeria’s Largest Coal Reserve, Eyes 600MW Plant
Chairman of MOSRA Energy, Ramos Olukayode, has announced plans to develop a 600-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Delta State, revealing that the company has already acquired more than 200 hectares of land in Obomkpa, Aniocha North Local Government Area, for the project.
Speaking at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026, Olukayode said Delta possesses more than 200 million tonnes of coal, describing it as the largest known coal deposit in Nigeria and a major opportunity for power generation and industrial development.
According to him, the company has spent the last 14 to 15 years exploring coal deposits across communities including Obomkpa, Ugboba, Ukwu-Uzu and Ugbodu, where extensive reserves have been confirmed.
“What we found is an extensive coal deposit, over 200 million tonnes of coal in Delta State.”
Olukayode said the discovery informed the company’s decision to locate its flagship coal-fired power plant in Obomkpa, adding that the Delta State Government has encouraged MOSRA Energy to eventually expand the project from 600 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts.
“The state government has even challenged us to increase the capacity from 600 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts. We told them that we should begin with the 600-megawatt plant first and then, as we scale up, expand to 1,000 megawatts.”
He disclosed that mining activities are already underway, with host communities actively participating in the project.
Olukayode said the proposed power plant would benefit from having its coal source located adjacent to the facility, eliminating concerns over feedstock supply that have affected some thermal power plants.
“In our case, the coal, the feedstock is located right beside the proposed power plant. So feedstock availability is no longer an issue.”
Beyond electricity generation, he said the project is expected to stimulate industrialisation by unlocking other mineral resources in the area, including kaolin, clay, silica and limestone, which are used in the production of ceramics, tiles, sanitary ware, refractories, paints, coatings, ethanol and glass.
He called on investors to partner with the company in developing an industrial ecosystem around the power project, saying proximity to both power and raw materials would reduce production costs and attract manufacturing industries to Delta State.
