May Edochie’s Lawyer Quits Divorce Case, Blames ‘Toxic’ Fan Harassment

May Edochie’s Lawyer Quits Divorce Case, Blames ‘Toxic’ Fan Harassment

Emeka Ugwuonye, the lawyer representing May Edochie in her divorce proceedings against Nollywood actor Yul Edochie, has officially withdrawn from the case, citing persistent online harassment from May’s fanbase as the reason for his decision.

In a statement released via the official Facebook page of his law firm, Due Process Advocates (DPA), Ugwuonye said the increasingly toxic behaviour of members of the ‘May Nation’ online community made it impossible for him and his team to continue.

“DPA’s services to Queen May have come to an end,” the statement read. “The hostile environment fostered by certain individuals within the ‘May Nation’ group made it untenable for us to continue effective representation.”

Ugwuonye explained that what began as a mission to support May through a difficult marital crisis had been derailed by cyberbullying and mistrust—ironically not from the opposing party, but from those who publicly support his client.

“My staff face daily abuse from May’s supporters, having already endured similar attacks from Yul’s supporters,” he said, adding that the hostility from May’s faction had, in many instances, been worse than that of the opposition.

The legal practitioner pointed out that while the actions of Yul Edochie and his alleged second wife, Judy Austin, may have ignited the controversy, it was the unchecked aggression from May’s supporters that ultimately forced the firm to step away.

“Queen May’s inability to meaningfully influence this increasingly toxic faction of her supporters is incompatible with the level of investment required for our representation,” Ugwuonye noted.

Despite the dramatic exit, the lawyer maintained a respectful stance toward his now-former client. He described May as a “remarkable individual” and acknowledged her as a victim of betrayal and forced polygamy.

He further assured that DPA would cooperate fully with any new legal team she appoints, stating, “DPA will work cooperatively with Queen May and her team to transition our work to any successor representatives she designates.”
