Enugu Man Confesses to Killing Girlfriend Over HIV Dispute


A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has recounted how he allegedly murdered his 27-year-old girlfriend, Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu, inside his apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, following a violent midnight dispute triggered by accusations of HIV transmission.

The confession was disclosed in an interrogation video released by the Enugu State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe. The police identified the deceased as a recent graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, who had just completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment.

According to Emmanuel, the confrontation occurred around midnight on September 19, 2026, after he claimed he could cure individuals living with medical conditions like hepatitis C, HIV, and syphilis. He stated that Ugwu accused him of infecting her with HIV, leading to a physical fight.

Emmanuel claimed Ugwu initially attacked him with a wooden pestle. After wrestling the object from her, he struck her, causing her to collapse. He admitted to subsequently using a machete to inflict severe injuries on her head, neck, and wrist.

Following the killing, Emmanuel wrapped the body in a black nylon bag, dragged it into the toilet, and locked the master bedroom. The decomposing remains stayed hidden until September 21, when neighbors forced entry after detecting a foul odor from the building and restrained Emmanuel before police operatives rescued him from an angry mob.

Emmanuel admitted damaging Ugwu’s mobile phone to prevent investigators from tracing him. Claiming he was possibly under the influence of substances during the attack, the suspect pleaded for mercy from authorities.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, confirmed that the victim’s family has been interviewed and directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to finalize the case file for immediate prosecution.
