Toke Makinwa Reveals Why She Left Her Marriage Despite Public Scrutiny
Media star and entrepreneur Toke Makinwa has opened up about her decision to leave her past marriage, explaining how the emotional intensity and public scrutiny made the relationship unsustainable.
In a recent interview with media host Chude Jideonwo, Makinwa shared that the constant spotlight on her marriage added to her struggles and influenced her decision to walk away.
She revealed that while society often underestimates survivors, the reality of their pain cannot be dismissed simply because they choose to heal and move forward.
“People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back 10 minutes stronger, it unsettles others. Instead of learning from it, they see your strength as a threat. Until you have walked in my shoes, don’t comment on it,” Makinwa said.
The actress and businesswoman further explained that she might have stayed longer if the relationship had been private, but the level of public attention made it harmful to her well-being.
“Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public. But the way I loved this person would have been dangerous for me. If I stayed, how I felt would have consumed my entire life,” she added.
Despite the challenges of leaving, Makinwa stressed that walking away was the only way to protect her health, future, and identity. She emphasised the importance of prioritising self-worth and resilience over societal expectations.
By sharing her story, Toke Makinwa highlighted the courage it takes to leave a toxic environment, showing that survival is not weakness but strength.
