Snoop Dogg to Perform at AFL Grand Final, Declares Love for Aussie Rules
American rap legend Snoop Dogg has expressed his admiration for Australian Rules football ahead of his highly anticipated performance at the AFL Grand Final.
The 53-year-old entertainer, who will headline the show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday before a crowd of nearly 100,000 fans, said he has grown fond of the sport after years of visiting Australia.
“I’ve been coming to this country for years and I understand what this game is and what it means,” Snoop Dogg said during a media appearance.
“I know that it’s not just a sport, it’s a way of life. I just fell in love with the sport.”
He admitted that while he previously watched the game without fully understanding it, his recent immersion has deepened his appreciation. “It reminded me of American football, rugby and a couple of other things, but now that I understand it, I like it and want to know more about it before the grand finale,” he added.
The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was a controversial choice for the AFL’s premier sporting event due to his past lyrics containing misogynistic and offensive content. Critics accused the AFL of double standards, especially after banning Adelaide star Izak Rankine earlier this year for using a homophobic slur against an opponent.
However, AFL chief Andrew Dillon defended the decision, citing Snoop’s global track record. “He’s performed at the Olympics, he’s performed at a Super Bowl, and he’ll suit our stage,” Dillon said.
Australian Rules football, with roots dating back to 1858, remains the nation’s most popular spectator sport, and Snoop Dogg’s performance is set to add international flair to the grand final showdown between Geelong and Brisbane.
