Regina Daniels’ Mother Defeated as Abubakar Yakubu Emerges AGN President

Abubakar Yakubu has emerged as the new president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), defeating Rita Daniels, mother of Nollywood star Regina Daniels, in a tightly contested election held on Saturday during the guild’s Annual General Meeting in Benin City, Edo State.

Yakubu secured 116 votes, edging out Daniels who garnered 113, while three ballots were declared invalid. His victory marks a historic moment for the guild, making him the first AGN president from northern Nigeria since its formal registration in 1998. He takes over from Emeka Rollas, who served from 2019 to 2025.

A veteran actor and administrator, Yakubu brings over 25 years of experience in film, television, and stage. He previously served as national secretary from 2019 to 2025 and has held several other leadership roles, including national vice president, treasurer, and public relations officer. He holds a degree in Dramatic Arts from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Rita Daniels campaigned on a platform focused on member protection, welfare, and empowerment, but her candidacy sparked controversy after outgoing president Rollas publicly criticized her, suggesting she prioritize family matters.

In other election results, Ifeoma Okeke was elected as the new national secretary.

Past presidents of the AGN include Larry Williams, Emma Ogugua, Zack Orji, Ejike Asiegbu, Segun Arinze, and Ibinabo Fiberesima.
