Sachet Water Scarcity Hits Warri, Uvwie as Producers’ Strike Worsens

Residents of Warri South and Uvwie Local Government Areas are facing acute shortage of sachet water, popularly known as “pure water,” following an ongoing strike by producers in the area.

The disruption, which began on Friday, May 1, 2026, has significantly affected supply, leaving many households struggling to access affordable drinking water.

A distributor who spoke anonymously in Effurun said the strike was triggered by rising production costs, including increases in the prices of nylon materials, fuel, electricity, and other operational inputs.

He added that consumers should expect a price hike once production resumes, further raising concerns among residents already battling economic pressure.

The scarcity has worsened living conditions, particularly for low-income earners who depend heavily on sachet water as a primary source of potable water.

With inflation continuing to impact purchasing power, the situation is expected to deepen hardship across affected communities.

Stakeholders have called for urgent government intervention to address the crisis, including stabilising fuel and energy costs, improving public water supply systems, and fostering engagement between producers, regulators, and consumer protection agencies to ensure fair pricing.

Observers warn that without swift action, recurring disruptions in sachet water supply could pose serious public health and economic risks in the region.
