Police Arrest 16 Over Ozoro Festival Incident, Say No Rape Report Filed
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 16 suspects in connection with the controversial Ozoro Festival incident, while stating that no official rape case has been reported so far.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, made this known during a media appearance, addressing widespread outrage that followed viral videos showing women being harassed during the festival.
“It is important to state clearly that among the four girls that were interviewed yesterday, no one, not one of them, said they were raped. Up till this very moment, we have not had any official reports that anybody was raped,” he said.
Edafe explained that investigations are being guided strictly by available evidence and witness accounts, noting that while sexual assault allegations are being investigated, there is currently no confirmed report of rape.
“The law does not work on emotions; the law works on available evidence and statements of witnesses,” he added.
He also revealed that the number of suspects in custody has risen to 16 following further arrests linked to video evidence and intelligence gathering.
The incident, which occurred during the festival, sparked national outrage after disturbing clips surfaced online showing groups of men harassing women in public. Authorities say the event was allegedly hijacked by criminal elements who exploited the gathering to perpetrate the acts.
Despite dismissing claims that the festival was a “rape festival,” the police reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice, assuring that all suspects will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted where necessary.
With investigations ongoing, attention remains fixed on the outcome of the case, as Nigerians continue to demand accountability and stronger protection for women at public events.
