NLC Calls on States to Adopt Imo’s N104,000 Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged state governments across the country to adopt the N104,000 minimum wage recently introduced by Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the call in Abuja during the 7th National Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW). The conference, themed “Building Trade Unions’ Future through Strategic Organising and Investments”, focused on workers’ welfare and the future of trade unions.

Ajaero praised Uzodinma’s decision to raise the minimum wage, describing it as “commendable and worth emulating” by other states.

“Many people asked me if it was real, and I confirmed it. This is the highest minimum wage so far, and it should challenge other governors to do more,” Ajaero said.

The labour leader noted that during wage negotiations, the Federal Government had been reluctant to push for higher pay, arguing that states might struggle to meet the obligation. However, with Imo State’s bold move, Ajaero said it was clear that other states had the capacity to pay more.

“Minimum wage is the least benchmark. States can do better. You don’t need to wait for another three years before reviewing wages, especially under the current economic hardship,” he added.

Ajaero also raised concerns about the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), accusing the government of diverting 40 percent of workers’ contributions and seeking to amend the NSITF Act for control of the funds. He demanded full accountability and restoration of workers’ benefits.

Meanwhile, NUCECFWW President, Stephen Okoro, lamented widespread unfair labour practices in the construction industry. He said many multinational and indigenous companies subject workers to poor conditions despite their critical role in building infrastructure.

Okoro reaffirmed the union’s commitment to ending casualisation, ensuring decent work conditions, and prioritising occupational health and safety across the industry.
