‘Pride Goes Before a Fall’ — Nigerians React to Super Falcons’ Loss

Nigerians have taken to social media to express disappointment following the Super Falcons’ surprise defeat to Malawi, with many questioning the team’s tactics, preparation and overall performance.

The result, which marked the first-ever meeting between both sides, sparked widespread criticism from fans who argued that the nine-time African champions underestimated their opponents.

Reacting to the defeat, Ickudy Louie faulted the team’s defensive approach, writing:

“Right from the first half the defence kept a very high line over and over again, forcing Nnadozie to always try to close the space in front of her. This made things easier for the two fast paced Malawian attackers. Coach Madugu failed to see this through 90 minutes of football. Congrats to Malawi, well deserved win.”

Another fan, Gulusumba Kamtete, mocked the result, saying:

“First meeting with Malawi and you have been shown pepper.”

For Victor Egemonu, the defeat was a lesson in humility.

“Rule No1 never underestimate an opponent. Pride goes before a fall.”

Several supporters also criticised the players’ body language and performance. SoloAmbon wrote:

“Our players yesterday were playing as if they were forced to play.”

Similarly, Ugochukwu Emmanuel highlighted what he described as a lack of coordination across the team.

“The entire team lack coordination… Over confidence makes the goal keeper make a lot of mistakes, the midfielders lose ball carelessly, the wingers can’t do proper crossing, the number 9 (Esther Okoronkwo) is not always in her position.”

Others questioned the team’s level of preparation ahead of the competition. Ganiu Oyewole referenced comments previously made by head coach Justine Madugu, arguing:

“Even the coach admitted that the Falcons are not well prepared for the competition… It is a pity we always put ourselves in this kind of situation.”

Despite the setback, many supporters urged the Super Falcons to regroup quickly and improve their performances as they continue their campaign.
