Lassa fever kills 214 in Nigeria, death rate rises to 25% — NCDC

Lassa fever has claimed 214 lives across Nigeria, with the case fatality rate rising to 25 per cent, according to the latest situation report released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

The NCDC Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 23 (June 1 to June 7, 2026) shows a significant increase in fatalities compared to the 18.9 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.

The report also indicates a rise in both suspected and confirmed cases when compared to figures recorded in the corresponding period last year, raising renewed concerns over the spread of the disease.

Health authorities noted that several states, including Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, Ebonyi, and Benue, continue to record the highest number of confirmed cases.

The NCDC has continued to urge Nigerians to maintain strict hygiene practices, avoid contact with rodents, and seek immediate medical attention when symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and weakness appear.

Public health officials warn that early detection and prevention remain critical in reducing the spread and fatality rate of the disease.
