Hollywood Blacklisted Me for Refusing On-Screen Kisses – Actor McDonough

Veteran American actor Neal McDonough has opened up about how he was blacklisted in Hollywood for refusing to perform on-screen kisses or intimate scenes with anyone other than his wife, Ruvé McDonough.

McDonough known for roles in Band of Brothers, Justified, and Yellowstone stated this while speaking on Nothing Left Unsaid podcast on Wednesday, nothing that his refusal to compromise on his values cost him roles, his identity, and even his livelihood for years.

“I always had in my contracts that I wouldn’t kiss another woman on screen. My wife didn’t have any problem with it. It was me, really, who had a problem,” McDonough said.

“I don’t want to put her or my kids through that.”

Despite including the clause in his contracts, Hollywood studios reportedly pushed back against his decision.

“When I wouldn’t do it, and they couldn’t understand it, Hollywood just completely turned on me,” he said. “They wouldn’t let me be part of the show anymore. And for two years, I couldn’t get a job. I lost everything — not just houses and material things, but also your swagger, your identity, everything.”

The 58-year-old actor recounted being fired from a TV show for refusing to wear a “modesty sock” during a simulated sex scene.
“They said, ‘Unless you do it, we’re going to replace you.’ I said, ‘Then replace me,’ and they did.”

McDonough admitted the experience made him fear his career was over.
“I remember flying home from Albuquerque and thinking, ‘I’d have a better chance surviving in the desert than in Hollywood.’ And I was right,” he added.

However, the actor remained firm in his convictions.
“I knew I did the right thing for my marriage. I knew I did the right thing for God. And I knew I did the right thing for me.”

In 2019, McDonough also told Closer Weekly that he had been fired from ABC’s Scoundrels in 2010 for refusing to perform romantic scenes, saying people wrongly assumed he was a “religious zealot.”

His career later rebounded when Band of Brothers producer Graham Yost offered him a role in Justified, which McDonough described as his “comeback.”

Now, McDonough is taking control of his narrative with The Last Rodeo, a film he wrote, directed, and starred in. To stay true to his values, he cast his wife, Ruvé, as his on-screen partner for scenes requiring physical intimacy.

“Well, my wife is really hot,” McDonough joked. “I said, ‘I’m not doing the movie unless you play my wife.’ She said, ‘I’m not an actor.’ I said, ‘Well, you are now. Let’s go.’”
