Forest Striker Awoniyi Undergoes Emergency Surgery
Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent emergency abdominal surgery on Monday after suffering a severe injury during the team’s 2-2 draw against Leicester at the City Ground on Sunday.
Awoniyi collided with a post while attempting to convert Anthony Elanga’s cross and, despite receiving treatment, tried to continue playing.
The full extent of the injury wasn’t apparent until Monday, prompting Forest’s medical staff to rush him to the hospital for immediate surgery. Fortunately, the procedure is not believed to be life-threatening.
The incident sparked a heated reaction from Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who stormed onto the pitch and confronted manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the final whistle.
Marinakis expressed concern over Awoniyi’s condition, questioning Nuno’s decision to keep the player on despite consulting with medical staff during stoppage time.
The draw was a significant setback for Forest’s Champions League aspirations, leaving them one point outside the top five Premier League spots with two games remaining.
Although they no longer control their own destiny, Forest is guaranteed a spot in the UEFA Conference League, marking their return to European football since the 1995-96 season.
