UEFA Delegates Storm Out of FIFA Congress Over Infantino’s Lateness
UEFA delegates walked out of the FIFA Congress in Paraguay after FIFA President Gianni Infantino arrived more than two hours late, sparking tensions between the two governing bodies.
Infantino’s delayed arrival was attributed to his diplomatic tour of the Middle East with US President Donald Trump, which included stops in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, hosts of the 2022 and 2034 World Cups.
The UEFA delegation, led by President Aleksander Ceferin, protested Infantino’s prioritization of “private political interests” over football, describing the disruption as “deeply regrettable”.
UEFA’s statement emphasized that last-minute changes to the congress timetable did the game “no service” and that football should come first.
Infantino defended his actions, stating that his trip allowed him to represent football in important discussions with global leaders.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom attempted to downplay the fallout, highlighting the organization’s excellent relationship with UEFA.
Several delegates from the Concacaf region, representing North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, also left the congress early in solidarity with UEFA.
Norwegian Football Association president Lise Klaveness criticized the disruption, emphasizing the importance of professional leadership and dialogue at the highest level.
