FG Moves to Set Age Limit for Social Media in Nigeria

The Federal Government has disclosed that it is considering age restrictions for social media use in Nigeria as part of measures aimed at protecting children online.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the government is currently evaluating policy options to safeguard young internet users while maintaining access to digital opportunities.

According to him, although the internet offers significant benefits for learning, creativity and communication, it also exposes children to risks such as cyberbullying, harmful content, online exploitation and misuse of personal data.

“As Nigeria evaluates potential policy approaches for protection of children online, including age restrictions, improved age verification systems, platform accountability measures, and enhanced regulatory oversight, public input is essential to ensure that any framework adopted reflects national priorities, respects children’s rights, and responds to the realities of Nigeria’s digital landscape,” Tijani said.

The minister urged parents, educators, young people and digital professionals to contribute their views through a government survey designed to guide evidence-based policy decisions.

Nigeria has witnessed a surge in internet and social media usage in recent years, driven by rising smartphone adoption and expanding broadband access across the country.

Data from the Nigeria Data Protection Commission indicates that over 40 million Nigerians spend an average of six hours daily on social media, highlighting the growing influence of digital platforms in everyday life.

The proposed age restriction policy, if implemented, could introduce stricter verification systems and greater accountability for social media platforms operating in the country.
