World Press Freedom Day: Delta Journalists Urged to Fight Misinformation, Promote Peace

Journalists in Delta State have been urged to take the lead in conflict prevention and peacebuilding, as the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) marked the World Press Freedom Day 2026 in Asaba.

The event, themed “Journalism as a Tool for Conflict Prevention and Peace Building,” held at the DOPF Secretariat, drew media professionals and stakeholders who called for renewed commitment to ethical journalism amid rising misinformation and national tensions.

Delivering a keynote lecture, Dr. Gideon Isika challenged journalists to rise above political pressure and propaganda, stressing the critical role of the media in shaping national stability.

“Journalists must rise above political pressure, propaganda and ethical lapses to uphold truth and foster national cohesion,” he said.

He described the theme as timely, noting that Nigeria’s democracy is increasingly under strain due to insecurity, conflict, and governance challenges.

Dr. Isika warned that while conflict can sometimes produce solutions, poor handling often leads to chaos and underdevelopment.

“The media has a duty to guide society toward constructive outcomes… the public has a right to the truth,” he added.

He further criticised the growing trend of misinformation and sensationalism in online journalism, attributing it to poor verification practices.

“Credibility is the cornerstone of journalism. Without trustworthiness, the profession becomes nothing more than distorted narratives.”

In a strong rebuke of unethical practices, he condemned what he described as “begging-bowl journalism” and the tendency of some practitioners to serve political interests.

“Journalists must act as watchdogs, not lapdogs… resist manipulation and refuse to sacrifice truth for personal gain.”

Dr. Isika urged media practitioners to adhere strictly to global ethical standards, including accuracy, fairness, and balance, while avoiding reports capable of inflaming tensions.

He also encouraged journalists to promote dialogue and national unity through responsible reporting, community engagement, and constructive conversations.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Assistant on New Media to the Delta State Governor, Comrade Felix Ofou, commended DOPF’s independence but called for stronger credibility and regulatory standards.

“You cannot be a successful journalist without independence. Financial independence is key, and that is why DOPF is important,” he said.

Other speakers, including media stakeholders and government representatives, echoed calls for professionalism, ethical conduct, and responsible journalism.

Earlier, Chairman of DOPF, Comrade Emmanuel Enebeli, said the forum is committed to promoting professionalism and ethical standards in online journalism.

He noted that membership of the forum is strictly based on qualifications, professionalism, and registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

The event brought together key stakeholders across the media space, reinforcing the role of journalism as a vital tool for peacebuilding and national development.
