Buhari Died Fulfilled, Not Punished by Karma – Seun Kuti
Afrobeat musician and activist, Seun Kuti, has weighed in on the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, rejecting claims that the late leader’s death was a form of karmic justice.
In a recent live session, Kuti dismissed widespread suggestions that Buhari’s death marked a symbolic victory for those who suffered under his rule, including his own family.
“Is that justice? That an old man has died of old age? After using our blood to secure the financial futures of his generations?” he asked pointedly.
Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, who was repeatedly persecuted during military regimes including Buhari’s, emphasized that the circumstances of Buhari’s death do not reflect accountability or retribution.
“We forget things too quickly in this country. There’s nobody who Buhari hurt and damaged more than my side of the family. He dealt with my family but I don’t see his death as any sort of justice or victory for my family,” he stated.
According to Kuti, Buhari died comfortably and on his own terms, having achieved his personal and political ambitions without ever being held responsible for the alleged abuses committed during his time in power.
“He died achieving everything he wanted to achieve. I read that he had been in the hospital for months and the Nigerian government had spent 3,000 pounds every day till he died. Now people are coming online to say that his death was karma. Like his death was some sort of victory. Was he charged to court and found guilty of his crimes?”
He continued: “How do we think that an old man dying of old age is justice? Some people may not even reach his age before they die. Natural death is not justice for his crimes against the country and against humanity.”
“His family is already set for life and people are jubilating that he died? How is death punishment? How is that justice?” he concluded.
Seun Kuti now joins a growing list of celebrities and public figures sharing personal reflections on Buhari’s legacy, as the nation continues to process the former president’s passing. With his remains now laid to rest, conversations around the implications of his leadership and the public’s perception of justice are expected to persist.
