Buhari Disrespected My Grandfather – Shagari’s Grandson Speaks Out, Praises Tinubu
Nura Muhammad Mahe, a grandson of Nigeria’s former President Shehu Shagari, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his respectful and dignified treatment of the late President Muhammadu Buhari following his recent death.
In a statement released this week, Mahe praised Tinubu for attending Buhari’s funeral in person and for setting up a national committee to organise a state burial. He described the gesture as “a mark of honour and national unity.”
“This is in stark contrast to how the late President Shehu Shagari was treated during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari,” Mahe stated.
Recalling the events surrounding his grandfather’s passing, Mahe expressed disappointment over what he saw as Buhari’s lack of respect.
“Buhari, despite being in the country at the time of Shagari’s death, neither attended his funeral nor accorded him a state burial,” he said.
“Instead, a government delegation led by the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who is notably a non-Muslim, was dispatched to represent him,” he added.
Mahe lamented what he described as a disregard for the legacy of Shagari, Nigeria’s first democratically elected Executive President.
“It remains a painful memory that Shagari’s death occurred under the leadership of a man who many believe harboured political animosity toward him. Even in death, Buhari showed little public remorse or respect for his predecessor,” the statement read.
He concluded by offering prayers for the forgiveness and eternal peace of all departed Nigerian leaders, stressing that regardless of controversy or acclaim, their legacies remain a part of the nation’s history.
