Peter Obi Explains Absence at Buhari’s Burial, Cites Flight Restrictions

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has explained why he was absent from the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, held on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday after a condolence visit to Buhari’s family, Obi said his inability to attend the ceremony was due to flight challenges and airspace restrictions caused by the large number of high-ranking dignitaries flying in for the event.

“Yes, it was difficult to come here yesterday because there were no flights,” Obi said.
“Even if you had a flight, you couldn’t land at Katsina Airport. It was all closed because of the number of dignitaries attending the burial.”

Despite missing the formal ceremony, the former Anambra State governor emphasized that mourning extends beyond the day of burial and his presence was still meaningful.
“It is believed that the mourning continues today and tomorrow. Whoever comes today or tomorrow is still part of the mourning,” he said.

Reflecting on his interactions with the late president, Obi recalled a moment during his 2023 campaign when Buhari encouraged him to prioritise the welfare of Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning, and I remember his words to this day: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians’. That’s what I always remember,” Obi shared.
“And I believe he did his best within his capacity. I remember vividly his sincere appeal for fighting and caring for the poor.”

Commenting on Buhari’s passing, Obi described it as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of power and life.
“We all have to learn how to serve our country, knowing that one day we will be called back by our creator,” he said.

Buhari, who died in a London hospital on Sunday, was laid to rest with full military honours on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura. The funeral was attended by top government officials, foreign dignitaries, and traditional leaders.
