Beyond The Ring: Why Do Men Kneel During Marriage Proposals?

By: Daniel Othegbemeh

A man reaches into his pocket, brings out a ring box, and slowly drops to one knee. The crowd falls silent, cameras are raised, and a single question follows: “Will you marry me?”

For many people, this image has become the defining symbol of a marriage proposal. Popularized by movies, celebrity engagements, and social media, kneeling has evolved into a widely recognized gesture of love, respect, and commitment.

Yet, as modern relationships continue to evolve, opinions remain divided on what kneeling truly represents and whether the tradition remains relevant today.

Among students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, kneeling during a proposal is generally viewed as more than just a physical act. Many see it as a symbol of respect, love, sincerity, and commitment.

Francisca Unutame, a 200-level Journalism and Media Studies student, believes kneeling remains an important part of a marriage proposal. According to her, the gesture carries deep meaning and reflects a man’s willingness to devote himself to his partner.

“Kneeling to propose to a woman symbolizes respect, humility, and shows that you are ready to devote yourself to your partner,” she said.

For Francisca, kneeling is not merely a tradition but an expression of love and sincerity. She believes the act adds romance to the occasion and makes the proposal more memorable.

“I think social media has influenced people’s expectations because many now desire elaborate and picture-perfect proposals,” she added.

A similar opinion was expressed by another 200-level Journalism and Media Studies student who requested anonymity. She described kneeling as a heartfelt expression of commitment rather than a simple ritual.

“I see it as a memorable and heartfelt expression of love, respect, value, and commitment in a relationship,” she said.

According to her, kneeling transforms a proposal into a sincere request rather than a demand, reinforcing the idea of mutual respect between partners.

“What makes a proposal meaningful is not how much money is spent on it but how well it communicates love, commitment, and understanding,” she noted.

For some students, however, kneeling is important but not necessarily essential.

Abia Divine, a 200-level Journalism and Media Studies student, believes kneeling remains a sign of respect to both the woman and her family. He said he would willingly kneel if it would make the moment more meaningful for his partner.

“Kneeling symbolizes respect to the woman and her family,” he said.

Despite valuing the tradition, Abia believes the success of a proposal depends more on sincerity than on posture.

“A proposal can still be meaningful without kneeling,” he explained.

A slightly different perspective was offered by Eze Chidera, a 200-level Broadcasting student of Delta State University, Abraka. For him, kneeling is largely a matter of personal choice.

“It’s a personal choice; what matters most is sincerity, not the posture,” he said.

Eze argued that the meaning of a proposal should be measured by the love and intention behind it rather than the specific way it is carried out.

“No, the meaning comes from genuine love and intention,” he added when asked whether a proposal becomes less meaningful without kneeling.

He also observed that social media has influenced how proposals are conducted today, often encouraging public displays that create pressure for couples to meet certain expectations.

Although students expressed different views on the importance of kneeling, most agreed that the gesture continues to symbolize respect, love, humility, and commitment. Whether viewed as an essential tradition or a personal choice, kneeling remains one of the most recognizable elements of modern marriage proposals.

As social media continues to shape contemporary ideas of romance, debates about kneeling are likely to continue. Yet beyond the ring, the photographs, and the grand gestures, many believe that what truly matters is the sincerity of the commitment behind the question: “Will you marry me?”
