Tompolo’s Tantita Gets US Surveillance Drones to Tackle Oil Theft in Niger Delta
American defence technology firm Textron Systems has signed an agreement to supply advanced surveillance drones to Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, the private security company contracted by the Federal Government to protect critical oil and gas infrastructure in the Niger Delta.
Under the deal, Textron Systems will deliver three Aerosonde Mk 4.7 Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) drones to Tantita, a company owned by Niger Delta security contractor and former militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.
The Aerosonde Mk 4.7 is a high-end tactical drone built for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Its VTOL capability allows it to take off and land in confined locations without a runway, making it particularly suited for the creeks, swamps, and offshore terrains that define much of the Niger Delta.
Security analysts say the drones could significantly boost Tantita’s operational capacity, especially in the fight against pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and other forms of economic sabotage that have long undermined Nigeria’s oil production and revenue.
The drones are capable of long-endurance flights, providing real-time aerial imagery and data to ground control stations, a feature expected to improve rapid response and intelligence-led security operations across difficult-to-access areas.
The development has, however, triggered mixed reactions among Nigerians. While many have welcomed the move as a necessary upgrade to protect national oil assets, others have expressed concerns about the increasing sophistication of equipment being deployed by private security contractors.
On social media, supporters described the deal as a “welcome development” that could further reduce oil theft and strengthen Nigeria’s energy security. Critics, however, urged the Federal Government to ensure strict oversight, clear regulations, and accountability, warning that advanced military-grade technology in private hands must be carefully managed to avoid abuse.
Tantita Security Services has played a central role in Nigeria’s oil pipeline surveillance programme since its engagement by the Federal Government. The company has been credited with contributing to improved crude oil output levels, following intensified monitoring and enforcement across major oil-producing corridors in the Niger Delta.
As Nigeria continues efforts to stabilise oil production and curb revenue losses, the deployment of advanced aerial surveillance technology signals a growing reliance on technology-driven security solutions in safeguarding critical national infrastructure.
