Tiwa Savage Opens Up on How She Almost Rejected ‘Dorobucci’ by Don Jazzy

Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has opened up about how she nearly turned down the chance to feature on Mavin Records’ iconic hit, Dorobucci, after initially dismissing the song as unimpressive.

Speaking in a recent interview with NotJustOk, the award-winning singer revealed that when Don Jazzy, the Mavin Records boss, first played the song for her during her wedding trip to Dubai, she thought it sounded “crappy.”

“Don’t know if people know this, but Dorobucci — I had Don Jazzy playing that in the hotel when we were in Dubai for my wedding, and I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a crap song,” Tiwa recalled.

She explained that Don Jazzy played the beat repeatedly during the trip, although she didn’t realise at the time that it was being prepared for the Mavin collective.

After her wedding, the producer insisted she return to Nigeria instead of proceeding with her honeymoon, telling her there was a song she needed to record.

“He said, ‘Eh, there’s one record, you have to come back to Nigeria,’” Tiwa recounted.

Upon hearing the finished track in the studio, the Eminado crooner said she was shocked and initially angry because she didn’t expect much from it.

“I got back to Nigeria and heard the full song, and I was flabbergasted. I was so angry because this had happened with Eminado too — I didn’t like that one at first either,” she said.

Tiwa added that she was the last to record her verse, still uncertain about the track’s potential.

“I was just looking at everybody in the studio like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’ But everyone had already recorded their parts, so I just did mine last,” she said.

Despite her initial doubts, Dorobucci went on to become one of the biggest hits in Nigerian music, cementing Mavin Records’ dominance in the early 2010s.

“We all know what happened to the record. I don’t know what Don Jazzy does, but it turned out phenomenal. Shout out to Don Jazzy,” she concluded.
