Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval to Deploy Nigerian Troops to Benin Republic

Published on December 9, 2025

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the approval of the Nigerian Senate for the deployment of Nigerian troops on a peacekeeping mission to the Republic of Benin.

In a communication sent to the Senate on Tuesday, the President explained that the deployment is intended to support Benin Republic as requested by President Patrice Talon, following a recent failed coup attempt in the neighbouring country.

According to President Tinubu, the request aligns with the protocol of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which mandates regional assistance during unconstitutional disruptions.

He added that the action is also in accordance with Section 30(5) of the Nigerian Constitution, undertaken in consultation with the National Defence Council.

The Senate has referred the letter to the Committee of the Whole for immediate consideration.

Nigeria had earlier provided air support following the unconstitutional breach in Benin Republic.
