Tinubu Removes IGP Egbetokun, Appoints Tunji Disu as Successor

President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police and is set to appoint Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as his replacement, sources within the Presidency and security circles have confirmed.

Egbetokun was asked to resign during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, according to senior police insiders. He complied and is preparing to hand over leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

Tunji Disu, currently Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos, is expected to assume office soon, with arrangements reportedly underway for a formal handover ceremony.

Egbetokun became the 22nd IGP in June 2023 after being confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council. His tenure attracted public scrutiny over controversies including security challenges and the extension of his stay following an amendment to the Police Act.

At the time of filing, no official statement has been released by the Presidency or the Nigeria Police Force.
