Soludo Celebrates End of 5-Year Sit-at-Home as Onitsha Market Reopens

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has praised traders at the Onitsha Main Market for reopening and doing business on a Monday, marking what he described as the end of the long-running sit-at-home shutdown that kept the market closed weekly for the past five years.

In a statement shared via his official X account, Soludo said he was “impressed” by the discipline and compliance shown by market traders, noting that Monday activities returned with renewed energy.

“I am impressed by the clinical compliance to our directives by Traders of the Onitsha Main Market. In the last five years Onitsha main market has remained shut on Mondays,” the governor wrote.

Soludo said the market witnessed massive turnout and renewed optimism, describing the development as historic for the state’s economy and public confidence.

“Yesterday, by the sheer will of our people, the jinx was broken! The market bustled like never before and the joy exuded by the traders was palpable,” he added.

The governor further declared that the era of Monday shutdowns was over, describing it as harmful to the state’s progress.

“Indeed, history has been made today and the self-defeating Monday sit-at-home has been trashed into the dustbin of our regrettable history.”

He concluded with a message of hope and faith, writing: “Chukwu na eme ife na’adighi ekwe omume. May Anambra continue to win!”
