Plateau Massacre: Mass Burial held for 27 Victims of Gunmen Attack in Riyom


A total of 27 victims killed in a brutal attack by gunmen in Bindi-Jebbu community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, were laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony held on Friday, July 19, 2025.

The victims mostly farmers, including men and women, were murdered in their sleep during a deadly overnight raid on July 15. The attack left many others injured, with several rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

During the mass burial, Chairman of Riyom LGA, Bature Shuwa, delivered an emotional tribute, decrying the wave of violence plaguing rural communities in the area.

“We are gathered here today in unspeakable grief, hearts heavy with sorrow, to mourn our brothers and sisters—27 precious lives, cut down in a cruel and senseless act of violence,” Shuwa said.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families, emphasizing that the entire local government area shared in their sorrow.

“No words can truly comfort you, but your pain is ours; your loss, a wound in the heart of all Riyom people,” he added.

Shuwa described the victims not just as numbers, but as fathers, mothers, children, farmers, neighbors, and friends, urging that their memories inspire a renewed pursuit of peace, justice, and security.

The Chairman also expressed gratitude to Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, for visiting Bindi immediately after the attack.

“Your Excellency’s presence was not just a gesture of compassion but a statement of solidarity that brought comfort to many broken hearts in Riyom,” he said.

He further thanked the state government delegation present at the burial for showing support and reinforcing the bond between the government and the people.

“May the God of all comfort wrap His arms around every grieving soul today. May the Bindi-Jebu community rise again in unity, strength, and hope,” Shuwa concluded.
