U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert Over Possible Protests in Abuja
The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has issued a warning to U.S. citizens about the high potential for protests in the Federal Capital Territory on March 4, 2026, linked to escalating global tensions involving the United States and Iran.
In its advisory, the embassy highlighted that previous demonstrations have led to clashes between protest groups and Nigerian security forces and strongly recommended that Americans in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday to minimise risk.
As a precaution, the embassy has cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for March 4, telling applicants they will be contacted about how to reschedule.
Officials urged U.S. citizens and residents to:
- Avoid areas where protests are taking place
- Stay away from crowds
- Monitor local media for updates
- Be aware of surroundings and keep phones charged
- Carry proper identification
- Vary travel routes and times to reduce predictability
The embassy noted that although protests are possible, the Consular Sections in Abuja and Lagos remain open, and citizens should visit embassy websites for further updates.
The warning comes amid broader global unrest linked to tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran, which have prompted heightened vigilance by security agencies in Nigeria, including increased police alertness in the Federal Capital Territory.
