Police Reveal Reason Behind Sowore’s Court Arrest
The Nigeria Police Force has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, stating that it was carried out to ensure fairness in the prosecution of individuals involved in Monday’s protest in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said Sowore was apprehended for allegedly leading protesters into a restricted area during a demonstration calling for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Hundeyin explained that the arrest was necessary to ensure that justice is equally applied to everyone involved in the protest.
“If we move from there to charge some people to court and leave the person who led them to commit that act, more like their leader, the elite protester who told them and took them into the restricted area, that would not be fair.
“And that’s why, in the spirit of fair play and to ensure that justice is served, Omoyele Sowore was arrested today,” Hundeyin said.
The police spokesman further assured that Sowore would not be detained beyond the legally permitted time frame, noting that the activist would be arraigned promptly.
“Like the others, he wouldn’t spend time with us. He wouldn’t spend up to 24 hours with us. Once we wrap up the charges, he’s going to be prosecuted. In fact, if everything goes right, our plan is to ensure that he’s prosecuted today. He goes to court today,” Hundeyin added.
Sowore was reportedly arrested on Thursday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, shortly after appearing in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu. The activist, known for his persistent advocacy for Kanu’s release, had earlier led a protest in the capital city demanding the IPOB leader’s freedom.
