Oborevwori Celebrates Team Delta Triumph in Lagos as Favour Ashe Becomes Nigeria’s Fastest Man

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated Team Delta athletes for their outstanding performances at the just-concluded Commonwealth Games National Trials in Lagos, with special commendation for sprint sensation, Favour Ashe, who etched his name into Nigeria’s athletics history books by becoming the nation’s fastest man.

The Delta-born sprint star delivered a breathtaking performance at the national trials, storming to victory in the men’s 100 metres final with a stunning personal best of 9.93 seconds, setting a new national championship benchmark and becoming the fastest athlete ever to win the event on Nigerian soil.

Ashe had earlier signaled his intent by running 9.98 seconds in the semifinals before surpassing his own performance in the final to clinch the national title in historic fashion.

The feat also marked the second time Ashe has broken the 10-second barrier to win the national championship, having previously claimed his first national crown in 2022 with a 9.99-second finish in Benin City.

Reacting to the achievement, Governor Oborevwori described Ashe’s performance as a proud moment for Delta State and a reflection of the state government’s deliberate investment in sports development and athlete empowerment.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor praised Ashe for flying the Delta and Nigerian flags high on the national stage.

Governor Oborevwori noted that the achievement reinforces Delta State’s long-standing reputation as Nigeria’s leading sporting powerhouse and demonstrates the impact of sustained support for talented athletes.

The governor also celebrated other Team Delta athletes who recorded impressive victories during the championships.

In the women’s 400 metres, veteran quarter-miler Patience Okon-George returned to the top by claiming her fifth national title with a winning time of 51.87 seconds, her first national triumph since 2021. Fellow Team Delta athlete Kudoro Taiwo finished in second position.

The men’s 400 metres event also delivered more success for Team Delta as Johnson Tyler, who recently switched sporting allegiance from the United States to Nigeria, raced to gold in 45.75 seconds.

Delta athletes completed the podium sweep with Achakpoekiri Victory taking silver in 45.91 seconds, while Emmanuel Ojeli secured bronze with a time of 45.94 seconds.

In field events, Divine Oladipo continued her dominance in the women’s shot put, successfully defending her national title with a throw of 16.90 metres, extending her unbeaten run at the Nigerian Championships.

Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening sports development and creating more opportunities for athletes to compete and excel both nationally and internationally.

He expressed confidence that Team Delta would continue producing world-class champions capable of bringing more glory to Delta State and Nigeria.
