2026 World Cup: Iran Raises Alarm Over US Visa Delays

Iran has raised concerns over delays in the issuance of United States visas for its national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, disclosed that no visas have been issued yet for members of the national team despite preparations already underway for the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

According to reports by Iranian state media, Taj said the federation would hold a decisive meeting with FIFA over the unresolved visa issue.

“We have not received any account from the other side regarding who has been granted visas. No visas have been issued yet,” Taj reportedly stated.

The federation also revealed that players may have to travel to Ankara, Turkey, for fingerprinting as part of the visa application process, although efforts are being made to complete the process in Antalya instead.

Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup has remained under intense scrutiny due to ongoing political tensions between Tehran and Washington, alongside concerns surrounding travel restrictions and diplomatic relations.

Despite the uncertainty, Iranian officials have maintained that the country will participate in the tournament while seeking guarantees from FIFA regarding visa approvals and fair treatment of players and officials.

Iran, popularly known as Team Melli, is expected to begin its World Cup campaign in June 2026, with group-stage matches scheduled in the United States.
