Flying Eagles Out of U-20 World Cup After 4–0 Loss to Argentina

Argentina ended Nigeria’s run at the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a commanding 4–0 victory on Wednesday night in Santiago, Chile.

The six-time world champions dominated from start to finish, avenging their elimination by Nigeria at the same stage two years ago.

Alejo Sarco opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, setting the tone for Argentina’s relentless display. Maher Carrizo doubled the lead in the 23rd minute with a stunning free-kick after Nasiru Salihu’s foul at the edge of the box.

Nigeria struggled to find their rhythm and were denied a penalty appeal when Ramirez appeared to foul Salihu in the area.

Winger Oseer Achihi offered flashes of brilliance on the left flank, swinging in dangerous crosses that forced Argentina’s defenders into last-ditch clearances. However, the Flying Eagles could not convert their chances.

Daniel Daga came close to reducing the deficit just before halftime, but his shot was expertly saved by goalkeeper Santino Barbi, keeping Argentina’s 2–0 advantage intact.

Carrizo struck again in the 53rd minute to make it three for Argentina before substitute Matheus Silvetti sealed the rout in the 66th minute, curling a beautiful strike past goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign in the Round of 16, marking a disappointing finish for the two-time silver medallists, who had entered the tournament with high hopes.
