Togolese Footballer Samuel Asamoah at Risk of Paralysis After Neck Injury
Togolese international footballer Samuel Asamoah has suffered a broken neck after crashing into a pitch-side LED advertising board during a domestic league game in China, raising fears of possible paralysis.
The incident occurred on Sunday during a Chinese League One fixture when Asamoah, who plays for Guangxi Pingguo FC, was shoved by an opposing player while contesting for the ball.
Video footage shows the 31-year-old midfielder losing balance and colliding head-first with the electronic board placed at the edge of the pitch.
In a statement released on Monday, Guangxi Pingguo confirmed that Asamoah sustained neck fractures and nerve damage, and subsequently underwent emergency surgery.
“He is at risk of high-level paraplegia and will miss all remaining games this season. His career may also be seriously affected,” the club said.
However, a follow-up statement from the club on Wednesday provided a glimmer of hope, revealing that Asamoah is now in stable condition after surgery.
“Guangxi Pingguo FC sincerely thanks all fans and all walks of life for their concern and support for Samuel Asamoah,” the club said.
“His recovery progress will be announced in due course after follow-up examinations.”
Asamoah, who spent most of his professional career in Belgium before moving to China last year, has made six international appearances for Togo, according to football statistics website Transfermarkt.
Meanwhile, Chinese football authorities confirmed that the advertising board was installed three metres away from the pitch, in line with international standards. The opposing player, Zhang Zhixiong of Chongqing Tonglianglong, received a yellow card for the foul that led to the collision.
As fans across Africa and Asia send prayers and goodwill messages, the tragic accident has sparked renewed conversations about player safety and stadium design standards in professional football.
