DOPF 2025 Convention to Spotlight Nigeria’s New Tax Law
The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has unveiled plans for its 2025 Convention and Annual Lecture, scheduled to hold in Asaba from Wednesday, November 26 to Thursday, November 27, 2025.
The two-day event will begin with the induction of new members and a capacity-building training session for media practitioners. The second day will be dedicated to the Annual Lecture, themed: “Nigeria’s New Tax Law: Implications and Opportunities for Businesses and Society.”
In a statement signed by Abel Johngold and Josephine Idiovwan Omodior, Chairman and Secretary of the 2025 Planning Committee, the Forum explained that the theme reflects the forthcoming implementation of Nigeria’s new tax legislation, which takes effect on January 1, 2026.
Nigeria’s tax structure has evolved over time from the Petroleum Profits Tax Act of 1959 and the Companies Income Tax Act of 1961 to the Value Added Tax (VAT) introduced in 1993. Each reform expanded the tax base and improved compliance, but the new law is regarded as one of the most comprehensive reforms yet, designed to simplify the tax system, close revenue leakages, and strengthen transparency in public finance.
The Planning Committee emphasized that the Convention and Lecture will serve as a platform for stakeholders to explore opportunities and challenges arising from the new tax law. Discussions are expected to focus on how government can ensure fairness in taxation, strengthen accountability, and channel revenues into infrastructure and social development.
As is tradition, the Annual Lecture will feature a keynote speaker with vast experience in fiscal and economic policy, alongside a panel of experts drawn from government agencies, professional bodies, civil society, and the private sector. Their contributions will offer practical strategies for implementing the new law while balancing the needs of businesses and the wider society.
Beyond the policy dialogue, the Forum reiterated that the Convention highlights its commitment to media professional development. By combining induction, training, and the Annual Lecture, DOPF aims to foster knowledge exchange, enhance capacity building, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s fiscal policy conversations.
