Delta State Graduates 51 Chief Drivers from Operatives’ Training School


The Delta State Government has graduated 51 Chief Drivers and Operatives from the 2024/2025 Training Programme, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and capacity building of drivers in the State Public Service.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Ministry of Transport Conference Hall in Asaba, featured senior officials of the Directorate of Transport, including the Hon. Commissioner, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, who was represented by the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Engr. Victor Omoniyi.

Agofure explained that the training, which lasted six months, was designed to equip Chief Drivers and Operatives on Salary Grade Level 07 with skills required for lateral conversion to the Works Superintendent Cadre and to prepare them for greater responsibilities within the service.

He congratulated the 51 graduates for their resilience and commitment despite the economic challenges posed by fuel subsidy removal, noting that the programme has remained consistent since its inception in 2006. So far, a total of 1,158 public service drivers have benefitted.

The Commissioner commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for prioritizing the welfare of drivers and disclosed that the Governor has also approved a new round of capacity-building training for drivers and mechanics in the state.

Presenting a breakdown of results, the Director of Mechanical Engineering Services, Engr. Itimi Kingsley, revealed that 29 students graduated with distinction, nine with upper credit, 12 with lower credit, and one with a pass, while seven participants could not complete the course.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, the overall best graduating student from Warri Centre, Mr. Aaron Ekarume, expressed gratitude to the State Government and the Directorate of Transport for their support and commitment to drivers’ welfare.

The 2024/2025 Chief Drivers’ graduation marks another milestone in Delta’s effort to professionalize its public service and build a more efficient and motivated workforce.
